Code compliance
Metal stair code compliance in Montréal
You received a non-compliance notice, a request from your insurer or an inspection report. We correct what is required, without rebuilding the staircase when it is not necessary.

Where the request comes from
- A notice from the borough after a complaint or an inspection.
- A condition from your insurer at policy renewal.
- A pre-purchase inspection report holding up a sale.
- A requirement from the condo board or a tenant.
- A near miss, and the wish not to wait for the next one.
In every case, the deadline matters. We come and look quickly, and give you a written list of what has to be corrected, point by point.
What we check and what we correct
| Checkpoint | Usual correction |
|---|---|
| Guardrail height (900 or 1,070 mm depending on drop and use) | Extension welded on the existing posts, or a new guardrail. |
| Openings between balusters (100 mm sphere) | Balusters added between the existing ones, same profile. |
| Handrail missing, discontinuous or not graspable | Continuous handrail added, between 865 and 1,070 mm, extended at the ends. |
| Uneven treads, broken nosings, slippery surfaces | Treads replaced or levelled, non-slip nosings, checker plate or grating. |
| Weakened anchors and stringers | Anchors redone, reinforcements welded, sections replaced. |
| Climbable elements on the guardrail | Horizontal rails replaced with vertical balusters. |
The values above are the general requirements of the Quebec Construction Code. The notice you received cites the articles that apply to you; we work from that notice.

Frequently asked questions
How long does compliance work take?
For a residential staircase, one or two visits are enough in most cases. We confirm the lead time after the visit, together with the price.
Is a permit required?
A repair or added balusters generally do not need one. A new staircase or a structural change often does. We tell you which applies, and your borough confirms.
What if the staircase is too far gone to correct?
We tell you at the visit, with both prices: correct or replace. A replacement is drawn, built in the shop and installed in one day in most cases.
Do you provide a document for the inspector or the insurer?
Yes. A letter describing the work done, with the before and after photos. It goes with your reply to the notice.
